Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai National Park is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. It is spread over 320 sq km and lies in the foothills of the Nilgiris, India’s Blue Mountains. The surrounding forest is the best place for observing wildlife in Tamil Nadu. The vegetation consists of grasslands and semi evergreen forests, and is the habitat for spotted deer (Chital), bison (gaur), tigers, panthers, wild boars, and sloth bears. Otters and also crocodiles inhabit the Moyar River. The park is also known for its large and growing wild elephant population, which is said to have numbered 600, at last count.
